Chimp Eden

Founded in 1977, the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) carries forward Dr Jane Goodall’s groundbreaking research on chimpanzee behaviour — work that forever changed the way the world understands the connection between humans and animals. The South African Chimpanzee Sanctuary is proud to form part of this global institute, which stands as a leader in conserving endangered species and protecting fragile habitats, with a particular focus on chimpanzees.

Beyond conservation, the Jane Goodall Institute is recognised worldwide for its innovative, community-centred programmes that link environmental protection with sustainable development across Africa. Its youth initiative, Roots & Shoots, has grown into a global movement, inspiring young people in more than 120 countries to take action for animals, people, and the planet.

By integrating local community needs with wildlife protection, the institute addresses the root causes of habitat loss. This holistic approach ensures that conservation efforts are both ethical and enduring. In South Africa, the sanctuary provides a lifelong refuge for orphaned and displaced chimpanzees, many rescued from the illegal bushmeat trade or circuses. Through education and advocacy, JGI empowers individuals to make a difference, fostering a future where nature and humanity thrive in harmony.

The institute also pioneers advanced satellite mapping to monitor forest health and chimpanzee migration patterns. This data-driven strategy, combined with Dr. Goodall’s legacy of compassion, enables JGI to protect biodiversity at scale. By supporting regenerative agriculture and local livelihoods, they create a resilient ecosystem where both wildlife and people prosper.
